As a General Safety Engineer, you will join the HSE unit, which supports CERN in the implementation and enforcement of its safety policy. The OHS Group, which is in charge of providing advice; monitoring and following-up on the implementation and accomplishment of safety objectives, aimes at a continuous improvement of a safe working environment. Within the OHS group, you will join the Infrastructure & Building Safety Engineering (IB) Section, a multidisciplinary team of Safety experts, covering several engineering domains such as electrical, fire, structural, HVAC, etc.

Functions

The job covers aspects such as occupational safety, occupational health, risk assessment, safety in projects, safety checks and fire safety.

You will:

  • Perform safety verifications on infrastructures and activities whilst coordinating a team of safety inspectors;
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of general safety verification services;
  • Provide advice and support in the fire safety domain following the prescriptive regulations in force in the Host States;
  • Perform commissioning of fire and other safety systems;
  • Provide support in safety for projects, technical reviews and/or audits;
  • Write CERN Safety documentation including rules, instructions and guidelines;
  • Provide content and deliver training related to safety.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of safety engineering or a related field.

Professional certification in the field of health and safety and/or fire safety is an asset.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:

  • Extensive experience in scoping and performing general safety verifications in complex industrial facilities;
  • Demonstrated experience in providing fire safety advice in both tertiary and industrial facilities.

Technical competencies:

  • Safety conformity assessment: knowledge of Auditing and Certification;
  • Occupational safety and risk management: assessment of work place activities; knowledge of risk assessment techniques and tools applicable to complex infrastructure and facilities; hazard identification and analysis, risk assessment and compensatory measures definition;
  • Fire safety and risk management: knowledge of Swiss or French Fire Safety legislations and standards

  • Communicating Effectively: delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience; responding calmly and confidently to questions.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak both languages in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages. And an undertaking to acquire the other language rapidly.
