BM23 and ID24 are two ESRF beamlines dedicated to X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). BM23 is a general-purpose energy-scanning XAS beamline installed on a two-pole wiggler. ID24 is an undulator beamline with two branches: an energy dispersive branch (ID24-ED) and a scanning branch (ID24-DCM). The two beamlines cover a wide range of applications in chemistry, solid-state physics, materials science, biology, environmental science, geochemistry, geophysics and planetology.
You will join the BM23/ID24 unit team and perform research within the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant project DEEP-SEE (Fathoming SEquestration and Enrichment of metals in DEEP marine deposits with novel micro-X-ray emission spectroscopy). The project aims to elucidate geochemical processes that lead to the economic enrichments of strategic reserves of rare-earth elements (REE) and redox transition/post-transition metals in bioapatite and ferromanganese crusts and nodules. The candidate will conduct micro X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy (HERFD-XANES, EXAFS), fluorescence, and diffraction measurements on synthetic and natural materials using a state-of-the-art, high-luminosity crystal analyzer detector. The candidate will also conduct mineral sorption experiments to reproduce enrichment processes in controlled conditions.
As a Post-Doctoral fellow of the DEEP-SEE ERC Advanced Grant project, you will:
- Participate and develop the DEEP-SEE research program;
- Operate, at beamline ID24, experiments linked to the DEEP-SEE project;
- Perform complementary measurements on other beamlines at ESRF and other synchrotron facilities;
- Contribute to enhance the performance of BM23 and ID24 in the field of nano HERFD-XAS.

- PhD in chemistry, geochemistry, geoscience, physics or closely related field obtained less than 3 years ago;
- Experience with X-ray absorption or emission spectroscopy and/or scattering techniques;
- Ability to productively interact with multi-disciplinary international staff and facility users;
- Writing skills and proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF);
- Experience in solid-water interface (geo)chemistry and knowledge in mineralogy or materials science is desirable.
Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 or 18-month period.
