Job Details

Location: Gloucester Business Park. Flexible home and office working supported.

Salary: From £50,000 dependent on experience, plus benefits

Employment type: Permanent/ Full Time

Closing date: 29th March 2023

Join EDF as a Fault Studies Engineer, and you’ll join one of the most exciting and challenging projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.

At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

Multiple Fault Studies roles are available within the Transient Analysis group, and we are interested in people with varying levels of existing technical experience or related skills.

As a Fault Studies Engineer you will be part of the Nuclear Analysis function providing end-to-end technical support to the licensees for the full lifetime of various plants, through design, construction, operation and into decommissioning.

This role requires an understanding of the behaviour of a plant under a wide range of fault conditions using deterministic safety analysis techniques, sometimes requiring the application of complex computer codes.

As part of this role, you will need to have or be willing to develop a good understanding of the underlying science (including system operation, core neutronics, fuel modelling) and how this can be analysed through application of computer codes. You will determine plant behaviour in a range of fault and accident conditions so relevant safety case assessments can be underpinned.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary from £50,000, we offer a competitive benefits package, including a company pension scheme, a wide range of flexible benefits to suit your lifestyle, and the opportunity to earn bonus.

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself.  We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.  We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

What you’ll be doing

  • Expanding the Transient Analysis group’s capacity to support plant safety cases for multiple licensees across all stages of the plant lifecycle;
  • Technically reviewing and accepting externally supplied work;
  • Supporting the resolution and close out of technical Open Points and Regulatory Issues;
  • Communicating analysis results through the production of clear, concise reports and presentations;
  • Supporting the justification, verification and validation of analysis codes and models;
  • Developing strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, building confidence and trust in the Transient Analysis group’s ability to deliver quality assured work.

Who you are

Your background may include some of the following:

  • A degree in a relevant science or engineering subject, equivalent experience, or the drive and willingness to learn this, leading to Chartered status with a relevant institution;
  • The ability to apply specialist technical knowledge to complex problems and communicate the outcome with a range of stakeholders of varying backgrounds;
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills;
  • Experience of using numerical Transient Analysis codes for fault analysis, and interpreting the results;
  • Successful interactions with multiple related technical disciplines;
  • Knowledge of light water moderated reactors and systems;
  • Identifying plant fault analysis technical problems, risks and potential solutions;
  • Safety case assessment creation and review;
  • Interactions with relevant regulators.
