Instrument Scientist

Salary: £31,931 to £44,166 per annum (dependent on skills and experience).
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire.

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent full-time scientist to join our ISIS Neutron and Muon Source instrument team, supporting and developing the science and instrumentation programs. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to work with our outstanding instruments, whilst also being given the opportunity to focus on their own research.

About the Role

The main aspect of the role will involve working on and developing our Vesuvio instrument, a unique neutron spectrometer that supports science ranging from fundamental physics to chemistry and materials science. Within this role, you will also gain exposure to our other instruments and will provide integral support to our user community.

We are looking for someone with the communications skills to interact effectively with our visitors from higher education institutions as well as from industry. You will work alongside and train these visitors to perform experiments and assist with data analysis and interpretation, and publication of results. You will also have the opportunity to develop both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A curiosity about neutron Compton scattering, transmission and diffraction, that concurrently employ a wide, thermal-to-epithermal incident neutron energy range.
  • A PhD or equivalent in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, materials science, chemistry or similar.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work closely with our users and partner, with great presentation skills for delivering science updates.
