Job Details

Salary: £31,931 to £34,709 per annum (plus annual role-based allowance)
Contract Type: Fixed Term (24 months)
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington

We are looking for an outstanding Laser Scientist to join the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC), based at Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire. This is a remarkable opportunity where you will work on the Relativistic Ultrafast Electron Diffraction and Imaging (RUEDI) centre, supported by access to specialist laboratory facilities belonging to the Femtosecond Lasers and Timing group for concept testing.

What will you be doing?

You'll be working within a centre of excellence for research and development on advanced particle accelerators. Collaborating with the top particle accelerator laboratories around the world, you will help to deliver innovative and ground breaking research facilities, pushing the science and technology frontier ever forwards. You will be contributing to the design of the RUEDI accelerator photoinjector and femtosecond clock distribution, with a clear goal of generating technical material to support the formation of a conceptual design report in 2022-23, and technical design report in 2023-24. Should the RUEDI project be successfully reviewed and taken to construction, there is the possibility for the position to be made indefinite at the conclusion of the 24 month period.

What you’ll need to Succeed

  • Degree in a relevant subject area (e.g. Physics) with PhD or equivalent qualification
  • Practical experience in operating femtosecond laser systems and application of those systems for research and development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts effectively and concisely

What we will offer you

This post will provide you with an incredible opportunity for learning and development within your field. We also offer a whole host of benefits including flexible working scheme, an excellent Defined Benefit pension scheme, free parking onsite, 30 days holiday (plus 10.5 public and privilege days), onsite health club and a number of other benefits.

STFC imageAt the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), research is driven by practical applications and a curiosity to create a world-leading hub of scientific and engineering excellence. Our science and facilities enable researchers to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe. Success typically requires long-term strategic investment, international collaboration on a global scale and the capability to push the limits of technology and engineering. To remain internationally competitive in our areas of science and to keep our facilities at the leading edge, we have to develop bespoke technology that cannot be reliably sourced on the open market, for example in detectors and instrumentation, accelerators, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These technologies are often also applied to address broader societal and industrial challenges and we actively promote their translation and commercialization.

Why work for us
When you join STFC, you become a key part of one of Europe’s largest research organizations. We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of. With access to our world-class facilities, people like you are helping us to drive ground-breaking advances in science, engineering, computing and technology.
