Job Details

Division: EG-Engineering

In this exciting role, you will lead the Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) electrical engineering area, which is composed of several groups: Radiofrequency (RF), Magnets, Power Supplies, Electrical Coordination, Electronic Maintenance (EM), Electronic Installation (EI), and Electricians (matrixed from Facilities Division). The EALE will coordinate and define/propose operational and maintenance tasks and upgrades in the electrical area for all Advance Light Source (ALS) Division groups, which are responsible for the accelerators and beamlines.

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) is a 3rd generation synchrotron-based light source that provides high quality photon beams to approximately 40 beamlines and serves approximately 2,000 users/year. The ALS accelerator complex includes a LINAC, a booster ring, the main storage ring and the beam transfer-lines that interconnect them. Engineering responsibilities required to operate, maintain, and upgrade the accelerators and the beamlines are split into three main parts: mechanical engineering, controls and instrumentation, and electrical engineering. Each of these areas are coordinated and managed by a lead engineer from the Engineering Division matrixed to the ALS Division (specifically, the EALE is that leader for the electrical area). These leaders have direct supervisors in the Engineering division, but have the ALS Deputy Division for Accelerator Operations as their work lead.

The ALS is currently undergoing a major facility upgrade. Although this large project, named the ALS-U, is organizationally a Division independent from ALS, a significant part of ALS personnel is matrixed and involved at different levels of responsibility and time commitment. Therefore, EALE’s responsibilities also include coordination and management with the ALS-U project of resource sharing, activity prioritization, and hiring plan development and implementation. Depending on their background and time availability, the EALE may also assume direct responsibilities and roles in some of the ALS-U project areas.

As a member of the Engineering Division, the EALE can also assume managerial/supervisory roles in that division, compatibility with his/her/their time availability and other ALS responsibilities.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and partner with the group leaders, current and long-term strategic plans for upgrading ALS sub-systems, and to propose them to the ALS senior management for discussion and approval;
  • Coordinate approved projects with the group leaders and prioritize the execution of projects;
  • Provide ALS senior management with periodic updates on their execution status.

Responsibilities in the ALS electrical engineering area include:

  • Oversee electrical aerial maintenance and operational support activities required of the 24/7 national user facility;
  • Identify weak areas and potential problems and to develop and undertake the appropriate mitigation activities;
  • Provide highly innovative and ingenious technical solutions to complex problems, contributing to your sub-area expertise;
  • Effectively interact and collaborate with the ALS, Engineering, and ALS-U Divisions;
  • Establish and maintain an effective network with national and international scientific/engineering peers.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participation in groups and committees, including hiring, policy and strategic planning.

What is Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing technical groups;
  • Demonstrated technical experience with operation of accelerators (or of similar complexity facilities) in general and specifically with one or more electrical subsystems required to operate them (e.g., RF, magnet power supplies, etc.);
  • Capability of developing cost estimates and managing budgets and schedules;
  • Ability to develop and propose strategic near/medium and long-term reliability and performance upgrades for the subsystems in the electrical area;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other engineering staff, scientific staff, and the highest levels of ALS and LBNL management;
  • BS degree in Engineering or Physics or a closely related field and at least 5 years, preferred at least 15 years of equivalent work experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of accelerator physics is desirable, but not necessary;
  • Advanced degree preferred;
  • Ability to set priorities and coordinate operations activities and major accelerator projects in the electrical area.

Salary:

The full salary range of this position is between $10,063 to $24,153 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $13,418 to $18,785 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay;
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate;
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment;
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
