Come and do the kind of engineering that made you want to be an engineer. Stretch your technical skills while building human understanding. Promote sustainability and create new materials. And, alongside world-leading scientists and technologists, shape projects that improve lives, and daily life, in the UK and far beyond. Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you’re equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

ISIS is the spallation neutron source located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK.  The accelerator facility delivers high intensity proton beams to two target stations to generate neutrons for condensed matter research.  Operation and development of the accelerators requires advanced knowledge of beam dynamics and high levels of beam control.  This beam information is obtained from a suite of beam diagnostic systems which provide information such as transverse beam position, intensity, density profile and beam loss.  The Diagnostics Group is looking for an experienced electronics engineer to lead a thriving diagnostic R&D program for ISIS and future machines.

Responsibilities:

  •  Lead the development of beam diagnostic systems for both ISIS and its upgrades
  • Electrical system design and development.
  • Electrical system installation and commissioning.
  • Development, maintenance and operation of beam diagnostic devices.
  • Experience leading small technical teams in R&D activities
  • Produce reports and present work at both internal and external events.
  • Willingness to travel to Conferences and for collaboration work both within the UK and overseas.
  • To be able to work outside normal hours and be willing to take part in “on call” work as and when required.
  • Assists with the supervision, training and mentoring of Graduate Engineers and Apprentices whilst they are on placement with the Diagnostics Group.
  • Work will also involve occasional time in radiation areas requiring the candidate to be a classified radiation worker.

Personal Skills and Attributes

The candidate is expected to be highly motivated and able to work individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team with excellent written and oral communication skills. Logical thinking and solution focused. Staff management and project management experience would be beneficial as is the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree (2:1 or above), in a relevant STEM subject and extensive practical experience within the Electrical/Electronic working environment.
  • Knowledge / experience in Analogue / Digital / Mixed electronics (operational amplifiers, filters, comparators, ADCs, DACs, multiplexers, combinational/sequential design, etc.) and/or embedded system design.
  • Experience in design and manufacturing work (Schematic/PCB design, assembly, testing, calibration, etc.)  Knowledge/experience in electronics simulation packages (analogue/digital)
  • The candidate will be required to become a classified radiation worker.
  • Be able to work outside normal hours if required and to be “on-call” to support ISIS diagnostic equipment when suitably trained

Desirable:

  • CEng./ MIET  MSc / MEng in Electronic Engineering
  • Knowledge of beam diagnostic systems
  • Project Management qualifications
  • Knowledge/experience in programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Assembly, etc.)
  • Knowledge/experience in data acquisition systems (e.g. National Instruments PXI and LabVIEW programming)
  • Knowledge of transducers/sensors, motion control would be an advantage
  • Experience in managing other members of staff
  • Mechanical construction skills

Company

STFC imageAt the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), research is driven by practical applications and a curiosity to create a world-leading hub of scientific and engineering excellence. Our science and facilities enable researchers to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe. Success typically requires long-term strategic investment, international collaboration on a global scale and the capability to push the limits of technology and engineering. To remain internationally competitive in our areas of science and to keep our facilities at the leading edge, we have to develop bespoke technology that cannot be reliably sourced on the open market, for example in detectors and instrumentation, accelerators, specialist engineering, optics and e-infrastructure. These technologies are often also applied to address broader societal and industrial challenges and we actively promote their translation and commercialization.

Why work for us
When you join STFC, you become a key part of one of Europe’s largest research organizations. We are trusted to support, enable, and undertake cutting-edge projects in an amazing diversity of fields that you could be a part of. With access to our world-class facilities, people like you are helping us to drive ground-breaking advances in science, engineering, computing and technology.

  • The Particle Physics Department (PPD) is one of the largest particle physics groups in the UK. We design, construct and operate some of the most sensitive scientific instruments in the world, collaborating with partners in academia, industry and international laboratories such as CERN. We currently work with the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, DUNE, Hyper-K, T2K, MICE, Lux-Zeplin, DEAP-3600, CERN RD50, Electron Ion Collider and AION collaborations.
  • The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) is a £93m UKRI investment over five years based at the Harwell Campus. This is a strategic element within the overall £1bn, 10-year investment into quantum technologies made by the UK since 2014.

Our benefits

  • 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 public and privilege days.
  • Flexible or hybrid working may be available dependent on role.
