Job Details

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics starting in July 2022. Qualified candidates will complement and expand existing efforts – both within the department and potentially other departments at Dartmouth – by establishing a vigorous research program, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, and supporting a diverse student body. The Department of Physics and Astronomy presently has about 20 faculty members and 50 PhD students, with research interests in astronomy, cosmology, particle and gravitational physics, space and plasma physics, quantum information science, atomic and molecular, and condensed matter physics.

We are seeking applicants in the general area of quantum many-body and strongly correlated systems, with special emphasis on the growing interface between condensed-matter, atomic physics, and quantum information science, and on computational many-body techniques. We are particularly interested in applicants who could potentially bridge expertise between sub-disciplines within the department as well as connect to researchers in other departments such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, and the Thayer School of Engineering – with the goal of expanding the footprint of quantum research and training at Dartmouth. A PhD in Physics (or a related field) is required, along with postdoctoral experience and a strong record of published research. Dartmouth provides opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in a wide range of academic departments, including Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, and the Thayer School of Engineering. New faculty members are eligible for grants for research-related expenses and a quarter of sabbatical leave for each three academic years in residence. Faculty also have opportunities to participate in undergraduate diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as our Women in Science Program, E. E. Just STEM Scholars Program, and Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. Dartmouth is highly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. Applicants should be able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds, including but not limited to: racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who identify with LGBTQ+ communities, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower income backgrounds, and/or first- generation college graduates. A diversity statement is required, where applicants should address how their research, teaching, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Applicants should submit their materials via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/92966. Required material are:

(1) a curriculum vitae including a publication list

(2) a statement of research interests

(3) a statement of teaching interests

(4) a diversity statement

(5) the names and contact information of at least three references

Reference letters are not required at this stage; the search committee will request reference letters through Interfolio after the initial review of applications.

Applicants are encouraged to spell out plans for building a leading research program in their field, to elucidate ideas for effective classroom teaching and mentoring, and to discuss goals for contributing to the growth and support of a diverse community of students and scholars on our campus.

Review of applications will begin December 1, 2021, and continue until the position is filled.
