Join our R&D program supporting the design, test, and operation of the MYRRHA proton accelerator!
Together with a large team of ambitious engineers and researchers, SCK CEN wants to develop new medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients and solve the nuclear waste issue by means of the MYRRHA project. The MYRRHA project’s first phase (start of commissioning scheduled for 2026) consists of a proton accelerator with one of a kind reliability and two target facilities with which research can be performed into radioisotopes, radioactive ion beam physics and nuclear fusion reactor materials. The subsequent phases extend the accelerator to drive a sub-critical reactor intended to proof the concept of nuclear waste transmutation (start of commissioning scheduled for 2040).
For the R&D program supporting the design of the proton linear accelerator of the MYRRHA project, we are looking for someone to work on the ion source and beam physics topics.
You will build upon our in-house knowledge and support our team of physicist and engineers working on beam dynamics and machine protection of the 100 MeV proton linac for the MINERVA facility. You will interface with researchers and technicians, working on an temporary injector test stand, which is the first part of the proton linac, which is currently installed at Louvain-la-Neuve.
Your tasks include:
acquiring expertise on the ECR ion source of the proton linac and assume overall responsibility of it (e.g. ensure it’s upgraded to fit its final purpose; define operational procedures, …)
performing tests at the injector test stand and analyse experimental data; documenting test results for later detailed scientific analyses;
interacting with research engineers and technical support teams at SCK CEN and at other research institutes and universities
participate to beam optics studies and the definition of the operational concepts/routines.
participate in the development of the machine protection system in collaboration with beam diagnostics and safety engineers
To join this frontier, you'll need
experience with ion sources and accelerators, beam optics models/codes and concepts are strong assets
hands-on mindset, willing to maintain and build upon existing experimental facilities
you will be stationed in Mol, but are willing to perform regular duty trips to our temporary injector test-stand in Louvain-la-Neuve.
a master or doctorate degree in electrical engineering, physics or equivalent
good communication skills and ability to work independently
fluent in English, both for daily communications and for internal and external reporting
flexible and open to work in an international environment, in collaboration with other teams at SCK CEN, with other research institutes and universities and within European and international research programs.
