Founding Director of the Oxford Quantum Institute

Department of Physics, Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford

Salary (£): Competitive

Pay scale: Senior Researcher (D35/RSIV)

Vacancy ID: 160475

Oxford is seeking a leading scientist, with the ambition and vision for the position of founding Director of the Oxford Quantum Institute (OQI).

Oxford has a distinguished history in the field of quantum technology and quantum computing, and there are more than 50 groups involved in quantum science and technology. This includes work on fundamentals, materials, and quantum technology, as well as initial work on applications of quantum computing to areas such as climate change, quantum chemistry and computational biology. The EPSRC funded hub in Quantum Computing is led from Oxford, and Oxford is also playing a key role in programmes using quantum technologies for fundamental physics. Over the coming decades quantum science and technologies will be widely applied, transforming many areas of science. Our goal is that the OQI will be at the forefront of this activity, providing training, innovation and fundamental and applied research across a broad range of scientific disciplines.

The potential scope of the OQI is broad, and there is no particular preferred discipline for the Director. The successful candidate will have made substantial contributions to the field of quantum science and technology, broadly defined. They will have experience in building collaboration between scientists across a broad range of different disciplines. They will be able to set out a clear vision and have the skills to implement it, and possess an excellent knowledge of the global landscape and context of the work.

The Director will be expected to build the OQI and establish a substantial research activity of their own within the initial five-year term, as well as facilitating grant and development funding to support the work of the centre. On stepping down from the role, they will continue with duties typical of a senior professorial grade. At present, the position will be located in the Department of Physics, but this will be finalised depending on the interests of the successful candidate.

A significant package of support will be available for the successful candidate.

For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Dominic O’Brien (dominic.obrien@eng.ox.ac.uk) or Professor Ian Shipsey (ian.shipsey@physics.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received before midday (UK time) 30 November 2022 can be considered. You will be required to upload a supporting statement, CV and details of three referees as part of your online application.
