The National Centre for Nano Fabrication and Characterization at DTU Nanolab invites for applications for a position in silicon nanofabrication with focus on applications in MEMS, NEMS, nano-electronics, and quantum devices.

DTU Nanolab conducts research within nanofabrication and characterization technologies. DTU Nanolab runs two advanced research infrastructure facilities, a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nanofabrication, and a facility, housing advanced electron microscopes for nano-characterization. Both facilities are located at DTU’s Lyngby Campus. Our research focus is on novel and advanced technologies for shaping and characterization of materials at the nanoscale with an aim towards scalable, stable and repeatable processes.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a research group conducting research in nanofabrication technology for applications in silicon micro/nano-electro-mechanical systems (Si-MEMS, Si-NEMS), silicon nano-electronics, and quantum devices. The corresponding nanofabrication methodologies are important for many of the industrial and academic users of the DTU Nanolab cleanroom, which warrants continuous development of nanofabrication processes, computer modelling methods, and investments in new fabrication tools. In addition, teaching in these methods is important to ensure continuous education of highly competent engineers for the nanofabrication/microchip industry, and academic research.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The appointed associate professor will work alongside DTU Nanolab’s scientific staff in general and will report to the head of DTU Nanolab’s Fabrication Section to ensure that DTU Nanolab contributes to and expand DTU’s existing research efforts through national and international collaboration.

This is a permanent appointment with the following primary areas of responsibility, where you will:

  • be responsible for the development, validation and applications of novel nanofabrication methods, such as new aspects of  deep reactive ion-etching (DRIE) processes, rapid thermal processing (RTP), thin film deposition by e.g. atomic layer deposition (ALD), and chemical vapor deposition (CVD);
  • implement and validate atomic layer etching (ALE) methods;
  • employ computer models/simulation tools to predict layer thicknesses and process times;
  • contribute to education and teaching within nanofabrication and MEMS methodologies with emphasis on e-learning and online courses;
  • provide expertise to the users of our facility and contribute to DTUs innovation portfolio in terms of novel nanofabrication processes and functionalities;
  • Additionally, an important task of this position is to secure national and international research funding in this area, which should lead to the establishment and maintenance of an internationally acknowledged research group in the described research field.

The successful candidate must be prepared to supervise PhD students and is expected to be involved in teaching activities related to BSc and MSc level students. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

We expect the successful candidate to have a strong documented academic and practical background within micro- and nanofabrication. You have a well-documented track record in micro- and nanofabrication using a variety of technologies. Demonstrations of the applicability of MEMS for industrial purposes is an advantage.

  • Are willing to conduct hands-on research in nano fabrication processes in the cleanroom
  • Are willing to establish and lead a strong research group at in the fabrication section of DTU Nanolab
  • Have teaching and supervision experience, and are willing to continuously develop your didactic toolbox
  • Are driven by collaboration with industry and with colleagues from other DTU departments as well as from other academic institutions
  • Are focused on the process as well as the outcome
  • Enjoy the process from basic science to application and have a good insight in applications of micro and nanofabrication technologies
  • Have a track record of secured research funding
  • As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
