Would you like to conduct cutting edge materials research at the world's leading experimental facilities? If so, the Materials Physics group have an exciting opportunity available to design, conduct and model High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) experiments at a range of facilities in the UK and overseas, such as the AWE Orion laser and the Euro-XFEL facility in Hamburg.

Location: Reading/ Basingstoke area

Salary: £33,300 - £45,000 (depending on your suitability and level of experience)

You will be comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary team (typically consisting of representatives from laser science, target fabrication and facility operations) to accomplish project goals. You will also work closely with the materials modelling team to develop and use computational tools to design and interpret results from your experiments, which will assist in the fundamental physics understanding of materials subjected to extreme conditions.

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • A degree (preferably PhD) in Physics or similar discipline;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Experience in conducting experiments using optical and/or x-ray diagnostic techniques;
  • Experience in mathematical and computational methods for designing experiments and interpreting results.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
