Applications are invited for a Professor in Financial Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics at King’s College London. Candidates are expected to have research expertise in some area of Financial Mathematics, to bolster the department’s research strength in this area and provide leadership for the Financial Mathematics Research Group.  Candidates should have the potential to carry out research that has high levels of originality, innovation and depth that may well lead to significant impact on their field and more widely.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a research record of international stature in Financial Mathematics and to contribute to the long-term research vision of the Department. He/She will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.

Detailed duties will be allocated by the Head of Department.

Key responsibilities

  • Take on a leadership role in research, teaching and administration within the Department of Mathematics;
  • Enhance the research profile of the Department, through maintaining a consistent high-level output of publications and presentations of world-class quality;
  • Sustain high-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual, joint and/or network research projects, and to acquire funding for the same through grant applications to funding bodies;
  • Supervise and train postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff to ensure their effective development;
  • Act in a senior role within the Department in administrative and other activities as directed by the Head of Department, including mentoring of junior staff, in accordance with the departmental programme and workload model;
  • Take part in strategic planning and decision-making at Department, Faculty and University level;
  • Promote and market the work of the Department in the subject, both nationally and internationally;
  • Contribute to national and international research council activities and similar panels as appropriate.
  • Lead and co-ordinate research activity in the subject.
  • Lead research and collaborative partnerships with other educational institutions and bodies.
  • Provide advice to external bodies, as appropriate.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field;
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the specified fields of expertise and an internationally leading research track record of publications and research grant leadership in this area;
  • Extensive experience of teaching financial mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with evidence of innovative and effective teaching and ability to engage and inspire students of diverse and international backgrounds;
  • A demonstrable commitment to an inclusive, diverse and collegial approach to education and research;
  • Extensive experience of assessment procedures in Higher Education and providing excellent feedback on assessment.

Desirable criteria

  • Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post;
  • Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills;
  • The proven ability to design and deliver lectures, practicals, seminars and tutorials in financial mathematics, including innovative and employ-ability-focused assessment;
  • Completion of appropriate training in equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post.
