Instrument Scientist

Job Details

Context

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, is Europe’s premier neutron research facility. Each year, over 2000 scientists visit to conduct cutting-edge research. The Spectroscopy group is equipped with advanced instruments, including PANTHER, a highly regarded thermal neutron time-of-flight spectrometer. PANTHER is vital for studying lattice dynamics, as well as magnetic and vibrational excitations in single crystals and powders. We are currently developing the PASTIS wide-angle polarisation option, which will open up new avenues for studying complex spin-lattice interactions.

Your tasks

As an instrument scientist, you will:

  • Develop your own research and contribute to studies in quantum magnetism and correlated electronic systems;
  • Support visiting scientists throughout all stages of their neutron experiments, from data acquisition and interpretation to publication;
  • Become a specialist in single-crystal time-of-flight spectroscopy, enhancing the group’s expertise in this technique;
  • Collaborate with the polarisation team to implement the new PASTIS option on PANTHER and other instruments, with a focus on developing user-friendly software solutions to fully leverage this unique feature.

Your profile

  • You hold a Ph.D. in solid-state physics or a related field, preferably with a specialisation in magnetism or strongly correlated electronic systems;
  • You have prior experience in single-crystal neutron spectroscopy, either as a scientific user or instrument scientist;
  • You are proficient in software development (Python, MATLAB);
  • Knowledge of neutron polarisation techniques would be an asset;
  • You are open-minded, eager to learn new techniques, and enjoy collaborating with external scientific groups as well as the numerous in-house services.
