Job Details
Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you a civil engineer with structural design skills and proven experience in project and contract management? Are you able to work independently on high-value, complex civil engineering projects from conceptual studies to construction oversight?
Join our dynamic team developing the next generation of particle accelerators at CERN. You will manage the life-cycle implementation of civil engineering for several new facilities and structures for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) – a 91 km circumference machine housed in an underground complex up to 500 metres below ground in the Geneva Basin, ensuring requirements are met with cost-effective and environmentally acceptable solutions. Working within a small team under a senior project manager, you will deliver high-quality solutions independently.
Functions
As a civil engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Interfacing and collaborating with key stakeholders, primarily final users, to identify and record all requirements;
- Developing conceptual designs, preliminary cost estimates, and construction schedules based on defined requirements, either independently or in collaboration with team members or external collaborators;
- Preparing detailed specifications and contractual documentation for tendering contracts with external design offices;
- Acting as the responsible technical contact for all aspects of tendering and contract management of design contracts;
- Managing the work of design consultants and other specialists necessary before construction works;
- Preparing all technical and administrative documentation for launching construction contract tenders, including pre-qualification processes;
- Following up on construction works and implementing changes as required by CERN;
- Monitoring budgetary aspects and undertaking project control activities to oversee resources working on assigned structures/facilities;
- Representing CERN in construction contracts, handling claims, RFIs, payment approvals, and follow-up.
Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of civil engineering and project management or a related field.
Experience:
We are looking for a civil engineer to manage all life-cycle processes up to completion of construction and defect liability period, with the following experience:
- Extensive experience within relevant fields of civil engineering such as cut-and-cover reinforced concrete structures, tunnels, reinforced concrete buildings, roads, drainage networks;
- Extensive experience working collaboratively with mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines;
- Proven experience in writing technical documentation for civil engineering structures/facilities;
- Proven experience in managing contracts for design and/or construction services for large civil engineering projects;
- Experience in providing civil engineering services to a large-scale multidisciplinary science infrastructure project would be beneficial.
Technical competencies:
- Design of road, excavation and drainage works;
- Design of underground structures;
- Knowledge of underground structure construction;
- Specification and follow-up of technical aspects of a contract.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations;
- Solving problems: being open to original ideas and creative options by which to address issues; continually driving change by seeking new ways to improve outcomes;
- Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements;
- Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications in English is essential.
