Your responsibilities

You will join a dynamic team of engineers, physicists, and technicians dedicated to constructing the CMS Tracker for the High-Luminosity LHC. This detector will operate at -35°C, utilizing a sophisticated CO2-based evaporative cooling system. Due to the high radiation levels expected, the innermost layer of the detector will require replacement midway through the high-luminosity program. This necessity opens opportunities to develop and implement improved mechanical structures and electronics system to enhance CMS performance in the second half of the high-luminosity program.

In this role, you will engage in several crucial engineering tasks related to the tracker construction and future enhancements. Your responsibilities will include:

• Overseeing the quality control of the thermal performance of the tracker mechanical structures;
• Contributing to the production and quality control of components, as well as integrating the on-detector cooling system;
• Playing a pivotal role in developing advanced mechanical structures for the first layer of the Inner Tracker, preparing for its eventual replacement.

This position offers the chance to contribute significantly to a project at the forefront of developing lightweight mechanical structures and advanced two-phase cooling techniques.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

• Knowledge of two-phase cooling;
• Design and testing of mechanical structures;
• Quality control;
• Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree;
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before;
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible;
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: September 15 at 23:59 AM hrs CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Target start date: 01-November-2024

This position requires:

• Work in Radiation Areas;
• Interventions in underground installations;
• Residence in the immediate vicinity of the Organization’s installations;
• A valid driving licence.
