Are you a Mechanical Technician interested in developing vacuum technology competencies, particularly helium leak detection? The we would love to hear from you!

You will be involved in leak detection of cryogenic and thermal insulation vacuum systems at CERN, with emphasis on the following:

  • Design and production of clamshell tools for leak detection in the helium transfer lines of the high-luminosity LHC project ; Testing and validating in laboratory of these tools;
  • Identification and cataloguing of these tools for forthcoming use at CERN.

In addition, you will join a team in charge of the installation, commissioning, and operation of the insulation vacuum system of the new high-luminosity test bench, which comprises superconduction magnets and cryogenic high-current distribution lines.

Who we are looking for

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Traditional manufacturing techniques; turning and milling capabilities; Experience with 3D modelling with CATIA; Knowledge of 3D manufacturing technologies; Basic knowledge of vacuum techniques and engineering;
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Fabrication and Mechanical Technology (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma. You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before;
  • Applicants with a PhD degree are not eligible.

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas;
  • Interventions in underground installations.

  • A monthly stipend of 4569 Swiss Francs (net of tax). Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund. Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract. 30 days of paid leave per year;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
