Postdoc (m,f,x) in Software Developments for the DAQ/Experiment Control System of the CBM-FAIR Exper

The department "FAIR Forschung NRW (FFN)" invites outstanding candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher position for experimental research focused on hadron spectroscopy at the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment at FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The department FFN is a newly founded research unit that combines scientists from the Ruhr-University of Bochum and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung to develop experiments at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt.

Your tasks:

  • You will be supporting the development of the Data Acquisition and Experiment Control System (ECS) of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment. CBM will be one of the major scientific pillars of the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt. The goal of the CBM research program is to explore the QCD phase diagram in the region of high baryon densities using high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. For this purpose, CBM uses different subdetectors: tracking detectors for vertex and momentum determination in the inside, various PID detectors for particle identification and calorimeters for energy measurement at the outside. All detectors are read out in a free streaming system, generating about 1 TByte/s of data during operation. This data has to be processed online and compressed and filtered for permanent storage. The task of the ECS is to control and monitor all relevant components of the experiment (e.g. all subdetectors, DAQ, infrastructure, magnets and beam) necessary for data taking.

Your profile:

  • a very good doctoral degree (PhD) in experimental physics in the field of particle or hadron physics or computer science
  • experience in DAQ or experiment control systems
  • experience in programming in C++ and python
  • experience in working in larger software developments
  • you enjoy to work with master and PhD students and the scientific and technical staff of the institute
  • significant experience publishing your work (shown by an appropriate publication list)
  • you enjoy working in an international team

Our offerings:

  • a full time position (39.83 h per week) limited to 2 years
  • a payment based on TVL E13
  • a qualified induction programme
  • support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
  • team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • a friendly and collegial environment
  • employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr

Additional information:

  • The position is located at the University of Bochum or at GSI, Darmstadt

At the request of the applicant (m,f,x), the staff council may be involved in selection interviews.

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.

German language courses are offered by the University Language Center (ZfA) in the field of German as a Foreign Language (DaF).
