Postdoctoral fellowship in gravitational wave lensing data analysis

We seek applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship at CUHK in Hong Kong, specialising in gravitational wave lensing data analysis. This position is part of the CUHK gravitational-wave group's research efforts in astrophysics and fundamental physics, focusing on analysing gravitational wave lensing data to explore the nature of compact astrophysical objects and gravitational lenses.

The project involves developing technologies and scientific applications for the first gravitational-wave lensing detections, which are expected to happen in the coming years, according to several independent forecasts, as part of the LVK collaboration. The independent forecasts suggest that lensed detections will occur at a rate of around one in a thousand. Given the latest and anticipated improvements in ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, the forecasts have spawned a global effort to develop technologies for detecting gravitational-wave lensing and using them in scientific applications related to fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. The postdoctoral position will join the group's longstanding effort to build the necessary technologies, such as tools to detect and analyse microlensing and strong lensing, before the first detection occurs.

About the group:

Prof. Otto Akseli Hannuksela leads the CUHK gravitational-wave group, which consists of one postdoctoral researcher (two openings this coming Fall), seven PhD students, and one MPhil student. Since 2016, the group has been an active member of the LIGO-Virgo-Kagra (LVK) Collaboration, consisting of thousands of researchers worldwide working on research related to gravitational wave observations and their connections to fundamental physics and astrophysics. The group collaborates on cutting-edge gravitational wave lensing projects with several universities worldwide.

CUHK offers a supportive research environment with access to local supercomputers and the LVK data grid, facilitating pioneering research in astrophysics and fundamental physics. The faculty members are engaged in diverse research areas, including numerical simulations, dark matter studies, astroparticle physics, CERN experiments, and investigations of the interstellar medium.

Position Details:

  • Duration: Initially, it will be two years with a potential 1-year extension, providing stability for long-term research pursuits.
  • Salary and Benefits: Competitive salary, generous travel funds, health insurance, and dedicated support for professional development, ensuring a rewarding career experience.
  • Start Date: Negotiable, anticipated start in Fall 2025.

Application Details: To apply, please submit:

  • CV
  • Statement of purpose outlining your research interests and experience in gravitational wave lensing data analysis
  • Two reference letters
