The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Your responsibilities include:

Identification of the metallic components in the inks of the unopened Herculanean papyrus rolls by means of X-ray fluorescence analysis:

  • Initializing and checking of an X-ray fluorescence scanner coupled with NIR photography
  • Material studies of charred papyrus rolls and fragments: analysis of the objects using X-ray fluorescence analysis and NIR photography (XRF/NIR imaging)
  • Positioning of the objects, independent selection of the areas to be analysed (region of interest, ROI), selection of suitable parameters
  • Evaluating and interpreting the experimental results
  • Documentation of the measurements, experimental results and evaluation using the standard protocols of the BAM (FB 4.5)
  • Summarising analytic findings in generally understandable reports
  • Collaboration in the preparation of publications of the research results in relevant scientific journals
  • Presentation of research results (lectures, posters) at specialist conferences

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed university studies (diploma/master's degree) in the fields of chemistry, physics, archaeometry, materials science or similar
  • PhD in one of the above disciplines
  • Knowledge in the field of non-destructive analysis
  • Basic knowledge of X-ray fluorescence analysis and reflectography
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Basic knowledge of German is required
  • Basic knowledge of Italian is desirable
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal-oriented and structured way of working, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as flexibility
