Job Description

The Institute of Astrophysics (IA) at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) invites applications to fill at least one faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on qualifications, beginning as early as possible and no later than August 2025. The requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy/astrophysics or related fields and a demonstrated ability and commitment to excellence in independent research and teaching. The search is open to all areas of astrophysics research and instrumentation, including interdisciplinary research.

The successful candidate(s) are expected to join the research and teaching activities at the Institute of Astrophysics and interact closely with students. The Institute hosts an active and dynamic international community comprised of 16 faculty, ~60 graduate students, and 15+ postdocs, carrying out research in cosmology, extragalactic and Galactic astronomy, stellar astrophysics, astrochemistry, planetary sciences, astronomical instrumentation, high-energy astrophysics, theoretical astrophysics, and numerical simulations. Applicants working in all areas of astrophysics are welcome to apply. The Institute maintains a vibrant scientific atmosphere in its newly renovated building, including a strong visitor program, weekly seminars, colloquia, and daily Astro-ph discussions. Our environment cultivates a rich academic and social experience and allows substantial networking opportunities and collaboration at many levels. Institute members are part of the French-Chilean Laboratory for Astronomy (FCLA).

As a member of the faculty, the successful applicant(s) will have access to the Chilean 10% of the telescope time in all the international observatories in Chile, including VLT, Gemini, Magellan, CTIO, SOAR, APEX, ALMA, and future observatories such as Rubin Observatory, CTA, E-ELT, Simons Observatory, and GMT. In addition, the Institute hosts several high-performance computers for numerical simulations and high-volume data reduction. Teaching duties mainly focus on astrophysics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidates ideally should be able to teach in Spanish within approximately a year, although this is not a stringent requisite.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, short statements of research interests and teaching philosophy, and the names of three referees whom we may contact for reference letters using this form by June 30th, 2024. Late applications may be considered until the position(s) is(are) filled. Further information can be obtained here or directly from Prof. Felipe Barrientos.

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is committed to equal opportunity and diversity in its workforce, including but not limited to religious freedom, and all qualified applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. The University is actively engaged in promoting gender equality in all selection processes.

If the selected candidate(s) do not reside in Chile, they will need to process their visa in their country of origin to join the University’s academic staff.
